Facilities

Gulf Park

The Fleming Education Center and the Gulf Coast Library at the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach are freshly renovated and reopened following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Historic structures on the southern portion of the scenic beachfront property are awaiting rehabilitation.

Stennis

Facilities at the Stennis Space Center in Hancock County include the Department of Marine Science’s two technologically advanced classroom and office complexes and the Center of Higher Learning’s High Performance Visualization Laboratory, which offers three-dimensional rendering of data sets.

GCRL

The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs features a series of laboratory and educational buildings and the Marine Aquaculture Park at Cedar Point. Following the wide-spread destruction of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the J. L. Scott Marine Education Center in Biloxi was relocated from Point Cadet in Biloxi to the GCRL site in Ocean Springs.

Point Cadet

The property at Point Cadet now hosts research vessels as floating classrooms and research platforms for the Department of Coastal Sciences.

Keesler

Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi hosts Southern Miss classes and administration activities in its Sablich Center, the major support services building for the air base.

Gulf Coast Student Service Center

Presently, many of the administrative and support functions of Southern Miss Gulf Coast are still housed in a temporary facility in Gulfport called the Gulf Coast Student Service Center.

The center occupies a portion of what was once the Garden Park Community Hospital in west Gulfport, but plans are for the eventual return of those functions to the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach in the coming years.

Highlights

Southern Miss Gulf Coast features two research-intensive programs at either end of the Mississippi Gulf Coast – the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs, Miss., and the Department of Marine Science at Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, Miss.

In the center of these two research arms is the second campus of The University of Southern Mississippi---the Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach, home of the 500+ year-old live oak tree called The Friendship Oak.
