Hard Fight on the Hardwood

The Golden Eagle Basketball team did not win their NCAA game against Kansas State.

However, the Eagles can be proud of their accomplishments this season.

Congratulations to Coach Eustachy and all the Golden Eagle players on a great season and for reminding us how proud we are to be Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

Celebrating Women’s History Month

This March the nation celebrates Women’s History Month and

Women's History Month

Celebrating Women in Science and Technology

recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  As a College, we want to acknowledge the women within the College of Science and Technology while we continue to improve opportunities for women in science.

In the New York Times in 2009, Cornelia Dean wrote that “the prospects for women who are scientists and engineers at major research universities have improved, although women continue to face inequalities in salary and access to some other resources, a panel of the National Research Council concludes” in a report.

To learn more about Women’s History, the National Women’s History Project (NWHP) recognizes and celebrates the diverse and historic accomplishments of women by providing informational and educational materials.

All For A Good Cause…

This week the deans or their representatives participated in the first-ever “Dancing With The Deans” competition.

After weeks of practice, the event was a huge success.  The competition kicks off the new Campaign for Southern Miss.

The event included a presentation of information from the USM Foundation showing how easy it is to support the 2012 Campaign for Southern Miss, including through payroll deduction. The goal of the campaign is to “increase employee participation in support of the university and its programs.”

Think Big this February

Every year, the nation celebrates heritage months.  The Smithsonian Institution celebrates February of 2012, along with the rest of the country celebrating Black History Month, by recognizing African American inventors.

The Smithsonian Institution prepared a bibliography of African American Inventors.  Click here to visit their site.

The Smithsonian, founded in 1846, is the world’s largest museum and research complex, consisting of 19 museums and galleries, the National Zoological Park, and nine research facilities.

Thinking big…

“There is no such thing as an average human being. If you have a normal brain, you are superior. There’s almost nothing that you can’t do,” Benjamin Carson. M.D.

Benjamin Carson succeeded where all predecessors had failed, in separating twins joined at the head, the Binder Siamese twins, in 1987.

He graduated from high school with honors, after having a rough time in school.  He then went on to Yale University and to medical school.

Carson’s successes include:

  • At age 32, he became Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
  • He is internationally recognized as a pioneer in his field.

Dr. Carson shares the story of his success with young people saying,

“You do have the possibility of controlling your own destiny if you are willing to put in the appropriate amount of time and effort.” Or, as he tells young people everywhere, “Think Big.”

The University of Southern Mississippi also celebrates Black History Month by hosting several events and programs on the Hattiesburg campus through February. The national theme for Black History Month is “Black Women in American Culture and History,” established by the Association of the Study of African American Life and History.
