Marine Science’s Gundersen Researches Coastal Waters

Marine Science’s Kjell Gundersen of the University of Southern Mississippi collaborated on new  study led by University of Georgia researchers concerning oncreasing acidification in coastal waters compromising the ability of oysters and other marine creatures to form and keep their shells.

Biology Doctoral Student Receives Smithsonian Fellowship

University of Southern Mississippi doctoral student Emily Cohen has parlayed her curiosity about nature and affinity for birds into a research fellowship with the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, Migratory Bird Center in Washington, D.C.

Cohen, who is scheduled to graduate in December, will begin her post-doctoral Smithsonian fellowship in January. As part of the two-year research position, Cohen will participate in the Migratory Connectivity Project, an initiative to conduct comprehensive life cycle analyses for migratory wildlife.

Polymer Science & Engineering B.S. Degree Approved by IHL

The University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Polymers and High Performance Materials has gained approval from the State Institutions of Higher Learning to offer an undergraduate degree in polymer science and engineering, the first of its kind in Mississippi. The program will begin in the fall 2012 semester.

The focus of the program is education and research in the areas of structure and processing of polymeric materials, and how these relate to properties and performance. University officials believe the new program meets a national need for graduates in this area of science.

Biological Sciences Major Crowned Miss Mississippi USA 2012

Myverick Garcia, a biological sciences major has been crowned Miss Mississippi USA 2012.  She works as a dental assistant at Dental Group of Ellisville and hopes to eventually pursue a career in dentistry. Along with the Miss Mississippi USA crown, she took home a $57,600 scholarship from Lindenwood University of St. Charles, Mo.

James Wilcox, Director and Dr. Brent Hales, associate professor and interim-chair of the Southern Miss Department of Economic and Workforce Development, presented a study titled, “Developing Local Entrepreneurial Community Coalitions” to an assembly of community college educators, support staff, and entrepreneurialism advocates.
