Federal Grants and Loans

The first step in applying for federal financial aid is filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA). Remember, you will need a copy of your parents' tax returns from the previous year to complete this process. Once you complete FAFSA, you can have it sent electronically to The University of Southern Mississippi's financial aid office to determine if you qualify for federal grants or federal student loans. The priority deadline for applying for federal financial aid is March 15 of each year. For more information, visit the Southern Miss financial aid web site at http://www.usm.edu/financialaid/.

MTAG and MESG

Mississippi residents are encouraged to also visit the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning web site at http://www.ihl.state.ms.us/ to apply for state-funded grants. The Mississippi Resident Tuition Assistance Grant (MTAG) and the Mississippi Eminent Scholars Grant (MESG) are awarded to qualifying Mississippians who attend public two-year colleges or four-year universities in the state of Mississippi. The deadline for applying for these grants is September 15 of each year.
