Transfer Requirements

Students who do not meet freshman requirements must either have an associates degree intended for transfer or have completed the 24 semester hours of designated college course work outlined below, with at least a 2.00 G.P.A. for admission to the university. (Admission to some programs on campus may require students to meet additional requirements.)

6 semester hours of English composition
3 semester hours of college algebra or higher mathematics
6 semester hours of science (must be laboratory-based)
9 semester hours of transferable electives

Application Checklist & Important Deadlines


Application Checklist

The Office of Admissions requires the following from all applicants:

  • Application for Undergraduate Admission (apply online or submit a paper application)
  • $25 nonrefundable application fee from all applicants (application fee increases to $100 after December 1 for spring applicants, May 1 for summer applicants, and July 1 for Fall applicants)
  • Official ACT or SAT scores
  • Transcripts from high school for freshman applicants; transcripts from all institutions attended after high school for transfer applicants
  • Documentation of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) immunization

Important Deadlines

February 1 - Priority deadline for fall on-campus housing

March 15 - Priority deadline for application to the Honors College
March 15 - Priority deadline for students wishing to receive federal financial aid
March 15 - Priority deadline for freshman applicants to be considered for Foundation scholarships**

* Transfer students wishing to apply for community/junior college scholarships should visit the Transfer Scholarships page for information about application deadlines.

**All scholarship applicants must be admitted before they will be considered for any scholarships.

Application Fee Payment Information

A nonrefundable application fee of $25 is required of all applicants. The application fee increases to $100 after December 1 for spring applicants, May 1 for summer applicants, and July 1 for fall applicants.

You may pay by VISA or Mastercard debit or credit card by entering the card information on your application or by calling the Office of Admissions at 601.266.5000 and paying over the phone.

You may also pay by check or money order. If you pay by check, please be certain to include the applicant's full name and birth date on the "memo" line of the check. When paying by check or money order, please be sure to include the Application Fee Payment Form along with your check or money order.

Online Application for Undergraduate Admission

Check on the Status of Your Application

You can access on the status of your application using SOAR. Additionally, SOAR allows you to see whether or not your application fee, transcripts, test scores, and immunization records have been received.

Logging on to SOAR is easy! Your user name is w + your Southern Miss student ID number (example: w123456), and your password will be mailed to you upon receipt of your application. The first time you log on to SOAR, you should change your password to one that you can easily remember.

Once you become a student at Southern Miss, you will also use SOAR to access your fee invoice, class schedule, and grades.

Honors College Application for Admission

Students who wish to be considered for admission to the University's prestigious Honors College must make separate application to the Honors College and apply for general admission to the University.

All transfer applicants to the Senior Honors program must have a minimum cumulative 3.25 grade point average.

March 15 is the priority application deadline for admission to the Honors College and Senior Honors program. Applications received after this date will be reviewed on a competitive, space-available basis.
