About AGEM
The Alliance for Graduate Education in Mississippi
is a comprehensive program designed to enhance entry into and
successful
completion of minority students in science, technology, engineering,
and
mathematics graduate programs. The AGEM consortium comprise the state's
four Ph.D granting
institutions: University of Mississippi (UM), Jackson State University
(JSU), Mississippi State University (MSU), and the University of
Southern Mississippi (USM), in partnership with several state regional
HBCUs and smaller colleges. AGEM is a comprehensive program designed:
- To enhance entry into and the successful
completion of doctoral programs in science,
technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields by
underrepresented minority students
- To develop and implement resources used
in the successful recruitment mentoring,
and retention of minority students in doctoral programs
- To increase the number of
underrepresented minority students who will pursue careers in academia
- To bring about a systemic change in
attitudes and practices of faculty, administrators, and students with
regard to minority issues.
What does AGEM offer?
Although not intended to be a fellowship program, AGEM offers excellent
financial, educational and social support.
- Up to $15,000 in direct student support
per year
- Tuition remission and supplemental
financial aid
- Implements professional development
workshops for both students and faculty
- Provides a strong network among students,
faculty and administrators
- Executes diversity and cultural change
activities
