  About the Program
The University of Southern Mississippi’s Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (SREU) is designed to give undergraduate students the chance to explore their interests in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology research.

Program participants enjoy a hands-on laboratory research experience under the close guidance of an active faculty member. Students will hear presentations by leading faculty on topics ranging from scientific ethics to GRE preparation; tour a variety of laboratories to hear about cutting-edge research projects; and will be coached on how to give technology-based presentations, how to do research using library and online resources, and how to master the fundamentals of numerical data analysis and graphical presentation. There will be significant emphasis on working as a team with other students in the program and in developing problem-solving skills.

The Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates is open to undergraduates at various stages in their academic careers. Science, mathematics, engineering and technology majors who have completed at least their freshman years (rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors) are eligible. A special “bridge” program will also be offered for minority students who are admitted to a graduate program in science, math, or engineering are eligible for consideration for the AGEM Graduate Summer Bridge Program. These students will join their graduate programs during the summer before normal entry into graduate school and may receive a stipend of $1,500 per month for up to two months.

Students who are planning to enter a Southern Mississippi graduate program in the fall are eligible for this assistance and are encouraged to apply.
