THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI

THE SOCIOLOGY CLUB MISSION

EDUCATION
The Sociology Club provides a forum where students and others can learn about the field of sociology and be exposed to research and theory on a variety of topics. We will invite guest speakers to some Club meetings to present their research, giving members the chance to hear and talk about sociological topics. We also will occasionally show documentary films related to social issues. In addition to such general educational programs, the Sociology Club will also provide opportunities for improving student performance in sociology classes at USM, such as hosting open study sessions for students to come together and prepare for exams.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Many students have expressed an interest in doing volunteer work in the community. During the school year, students will select service activities they would like to become involved with. Some students have commented they would enjoy working with children in after-school educational and social programs; other students would like to work on environmental projects or with Habitat for Humanity. The Sociology Club will provide the opportunity for occasional community service activities that relate to sociological issues and concerns.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The sociology program at USM wants to contribute to the professional development of students, and the Sociology Club will provide a channel to communicate information about careers, local job or internship opportunities, and graduate school. We will host guest speakers and workshops on professional development, and students will be encouraged to attend sociology conferences or other professional activities to develop social networks.

 SOCIAL INTERACTION
The Sociology Club will also have regular social activities. Some suggestions students have offered are:  movie nights; picnics; canoe trips; and a back-to-school barbeque. Such activities will give Club members the chance to get to know one another and to talk with faculty in a more relaxed, informal setting.
