ARTS & LETTERS COLLEGE AWARDS (2012-2013)

The College of Arts & Letters is issuing a call for nominations for awards in the following categories:

Arts & Letters Teacher of the Year Award ($1500 research/travel stipend)

Arts & Letters Creative and Scholarly Researcher of the Year ($1500 research/travel stipend)

Arts & Letters Faculty Service Award ($1500 research/travel stipend)

Arts & Letters Junior Faculty Member of the Year Award ($1000 research/travel stipend

Arts & Letters Staff Member of the Year Award ($500 cash award)

Deadlines:

Initial nomination letters: Thursday April 4th at 5:00 pm.

Submission of supporting documents by nominees: Friday April 12th at 5:00 pm.

Arts & Letters Teacher of the Year Award

($1500 research/travel stipend)

Description: This award recognizes a full-time faculty member in the College of Arts & Letters who has demonstrated excellence in teaching. The recipient will be recognized at the College of Arts & Letters Awards Day, April 18th

Eligibility:

  • Full-time tenure-track faculty member in the College of Arts & Letters with a minimum of two years experience at Southern Miss.
  • Faulty members who have received this award in the last five years are ineligible.

Nomination procedure: Students and faculty desiring to nominate a faculty member for this award should send a brief statement of approximately 100 words summarizing why the candidate has demonstrated excellence in teaching via email to Dr. Lin Harper, Assistant Dean and Executive Director iCoRE Lin Harper. Self-nominations will not be accepted. Nomination letters must be received by 5:00pm on Thursday, April 4th

Nominators are encouraged (but are not required) to inform the nominee directly of their intention to nominate the candidate so that the nominee may prepare and submit the necessary supporting documentation by the 5:00 pm, Friday, April 12th document submission deadline, or to decline the nomination.

Nominated candidates will then be contacted by the Dean's office and will be asked to supply additional documentation, including a three page c.v., three sample course syllabi, recent teaching evaluations, two letters of support, and a one-page, single spaced statement of teaching philosophy.

Arts & Letters Faculty Creative or Scholarly Researcher Award

($1500 research/travel stipend)

Description: This award recognizes a faculty member in the College of Arts & Letters who has demonstrated excellence in creative products, creative activities and/or in peer- reviewed, scholarly research. The recipient will be recognized at the College of Arts & Letters Spring Convocation on April 18th.

Eligibility:

  • Full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty member in the College of Arts & Letters with a minimum of two years experience at Southern Miss.
  • Faculty members who have received this award in the last five years are ineligible.

Nomination procedure: Individuals wishing to nominate a faculty member for this award should send a brief statement of approximately 100 words summarizing why the candidate has demonstrated exceptional achievement in creative activities and/or research via email to Dr. Lin Harper, Assistant Dean and Executive Director iCoRE Lin Harper. Self-nominations will not be accepted. Nomination letters must be received by 5:00pm on Thursday, April 4th.

Arts & Letters Faculty Service Award

($1500 research/travel stipend)

Description: This award recognizes a faculty member in the College of Arts & Letters who has demonstrated excellence in service to his or her department, the College, and the University. The recipient will be recognized at the College of Arts & Letters Spring Convocation on April 18th.

Eligibility:

  • Full-time tenure-track faculty member in the College of Arts & Letters with a minimum of two years experience at Southern Miss.
  • Faculty members who have received this award in the last five years are ineligible.

Arts & Letters Junior Faculty Member of the Year Award

($1000 research/travel stipend)

Description: This award recognizes a junior faculty member in the College of Arts & Letters who has demonstrated excellence and exceptional promise in teaching, creative activities, and/or research. The recipient will be recognized at the College of Arts & Letters Spring Convocation on April 18th.

Eligibility:

  • Full-time tenure-track faculty member in the College of Arts & Letters at the Assistant Professor rank with a minimum of two years experience at Southern Miss.
  • Faculty members who have previously received this award are ineligible.

Nomination procedure: Individuals wishing to nominate a junior faculty member for this award should send a brief statement of approximately 100 words summarizing why the candidate has demonstrated exceptional achievement via email to Dr. Lin Harper, Assistant Dean and Executive Director iCoRE Lin Harper. Self-nominations will not be accepted. Nomination letters must be received by 5:00pm on Thursday, April 4th.

Arts & Letters Staff Member of the Year Award

($500 cash award)

Description: This award recognizes a staff member in the College of Arts & Letters for his or her outstanding work. The recipient will be recognized at the College of Arts & Letters Spring Convocation on April 18th.

Eligibility:

  • Full-time non-faculty professional, administrative or staff member in the College of Arts & Letters with a minimum of two years of service at Southern Miss.
  • Staff members who have received this award in the last five years are ineligible.

Nomination procedure: Faculty, administrators, staff, students, or alumni wishing to nominate a staff member for this award should send a letter explaining how the nominee has demonstrated excellence as a member of the College of Arts & Letters staff. Letters should be sent via email to Dr. Lin Harper, Assistant Dean and Executive Director iCoRE Lin Harper. Self-nominations will not be accepted. Nomination letters must be received by 5:00pm on Thursday, April 4th

No additional documentation will be required of staff nominees.
