At Southern Miss, student-athletes realize the importance of achieving a quality education and strive to perform well in the classroom and on the field.
Student-athletes have full access to the Student Athlete Enhancement Program (SAEP), which provides academic support services and works hard to ensure that student-athletes reach their academic potential while balancing the demands of their athletic pursuits.
The high academic success of Southern Miss student-athletes can be attributed to positive influence from each member of the Golden Eagle coaching staff, an outstanding work ethic and dedication to their studies. Golden Eagle student-athletes are consistent members of the Dean’s List, and graduation rates of student-athletes are higher than those of non-athletes.
For the 2008-09 academic year, 11 of Southern Miss’ 16 athletic squads achieved an Academic Performance Rate (APR) score above 950. The APR was instituted by the NCAA in 2004 to measure the eligibility, retention and graduation of all student-athletes competing on Division I teams.
During the 2008-09 academic year, 19 student-athletes earned the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal for a grade point average of 3.75 or better, and 113 made the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Southern Miss also had one student-athlete win ESPN Academic All-American honors that same year.
Golden Eagle student-athletes are also involved in life skills programs that further develop the overall person. Every student-athlete is involved in community service projects through each academic year.
