Program's Goals and Objectives
The student should:
- have a sound knowledge of prevention, evaluation, immediate care, and rehabilitation of athletic training, as well as the ability to apply adhesive tape and protective padding for the protection of injured body parts.
- show efficiency in the use and understanding of the different therapeutic modalities used to care for athletic injuries.
- understand the basic knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology, biomechanics, and physiological principles
to provide improvement in motor performance and the prevention of injury.
- have an appreciation of the importance of working cooperatively with team physicians and the athletic
training staff as a liaison between the student-athlete and the medical community.
- have a sound knowledge of supervising the athletic training room, which includes the requisitioning and
storage of supplies and equipment, keeping adequate records, and maintaining an annual budget.
- have the ability to communicate and attain the respect of the coaches and student-athletes.
- establish a sound philosophy of strength training, conditioning, and nutritional aspects for the physically
active individual.
- be prepared to advise school administrators and coaches about factors involved in the safe participation of the physically active individual.
- understand the importance and benefits associated with active membership in local, regional, and national
professional organizations.
- meet the Board of Certification (BOC) requirements for certification.
- develop a desire for furthering their knowledge through continuing education components.
- understand the importance of and adhere to the Code of Ethics of the N.A.T.A. and the State of Mississippi
Athletic Training Advisory Board of the Mississippi State Board of Health, as well as licensing
requirements in other states.
