Labratory -3 Wound Care
(Subject to updates and revisions )
You and your "swim buddy" need to each complete the lab assignment and turn-in this sheet (handout below)with your PRACTICE of the proficiencies listed below. This will count as a Practice Session.
Steps:
a. Lay a clean open towel on the counter top
b. Gather your supplies: gloves, gauze pads hydrogen peroxide, band-aid, butterfly closures/sterile-strips, wound care ointment.
c. Put on Gloves. OBSERVE UNIVERSAL PERCAUTIONS AT ALL TIMES
d. Using your partner as a model (an athlete getting treatment for an open wound), apply pressure to stop bleeding, clean and debride with appropriate cleaning agent..
e. Approximate ends of wound and apply closure strips (or steri-strips)
f. Finish applying wound care ointment (with cotton tipped applicator) and bandaid.
g. Clean up and despose of bio-hazard materials. Put towel in laundry basket.
h. Remove gloves correctly and despose of properly.
If you need assistance, please ask me, a senior or a peer who has experience with this skill(s) This will count as a PRACTICE on your check-off sheet. You will need to perform these same skills for HPR 354L. But you will not have the opportunity to ask for assistance. YOU MUST DO THIS IN HPR 354L WITH OUT ASSISTANCE OR HELP!!!!!!!

You will need to perform these same skills for HPR 354L,You may have the opportunity to ask for assistance for this practice session. In HPR 354L, YOU MUST DO THIS WITH OUT ASSISTANCE OR HELP!!:
YOU will demonstrate the ability to:
a. manage open and closed wounds using universal precautions (PUT ON GLOVES CORRECTLY)
b. apply direct and indirect pressure to control bleeding
c. clean, debride, and protect an open wound
d. apply superficial skin closures (butterfly, steri-strips) and apply appropriate dressings
e. properly apply and remove gloves and other personal protective equipment
f. properly dispose of biohazardous waste
g. apply ice, compression, and elevation to an acute sprain, strain, or contusion
