Education Overview: Becoming a Certified Athletic Trainer (NATA)
INFORMATION FOR NEXT YEAR 2008



The next cohort group MUST submit application material by April 1, 2008.

Interview will be conducted during April/May. Students will be informed by June 1,2008 of selection or denial with classes set to begin Summer Session II - June 25, 2008. Students will need to complete HPR 354L during the summer session which requires additonal clinical sessions (days) beyond the end of the published 5W2 session. This clinical experience (HPR 354L) includes two-a-day sports camps including assignment to clinical instructors with the sports of football, soccer, volleyball or cross country.

APPLICATION and FORMS:


Students wishing to be considered for entry into the Athletic Training Education Program at Southern Miss must follow these steps:

1. All candidates for admission to the ATEP program must submit an application (MS Word document) ( Adobe PDF file*)

2. All candidates for admission to the ATEP program must submit three letters of reference on official letterhead stationary (athletic trainer, coaches, instructors, former employers) indicating your ability to succeed in the ATEP.

3. All candidates who are interested in entering the athletic training program should review and submit a signed version of the Technical Standards (MS Word Document)

4. Submit information on your clinical hours (100 clinical hours must be documented and signed off by BOC certified athletic trainer. (have your athletic trainer submit in official letterhead stationary document).

5. All candidates for admission must submit a copy of Personal & Emergency Information form (MS Word document) (Adobe PDF file)* complete medical history (MS Word document) (Adobe PDF file)*

 

6. All candidates must submit a complete physical examination and immunization record (TB Skin Test, Current Tetanus and Hepatitis B Series or Hepatitis B waiver). This form (MS Word doc)(Adobe PDF file*) must be used. This form must be signed by a licensed medical physician or other appropriate medical professional licensed to administer physical examinations.

7 . Official copy of college transcripts (can be sent directly from college/university to Program Director) Please note: Prerequisite courses and the grades earned during the semester of application will be taken into consideration during the admission process.

8 . All paper work must be submitted by April 1st 2008 Deadline.

9 . Download and Review checklist (MS Word document) prior to submitting application and all other material.

10 . Mail all materials to:

11. All candidates must participate in a formal interview before the ATEP Selection Committee. (You will be contacted regarding an interview before the selection committee.) Interviews are conducted during the months of April and the first week of May.

 

ADMISSION TO THE ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM

A final decision on your application status will be made after the formal interview, and any pending grades and completion of prerequisites. Decisions will be made on or before June 1st. Candidates for the Athletic Training Education Program who's GPA or prequisite course work does NOT meet the regular admission criteria may be granted probationary status for the first semester in the program and at the discretion of the ATEP admission committee. The student's performance and grades will be reviewed at the end of the first semester in the ATEP program and a decision will be made regarding the student's continued progress in the ATEP program. Any student NOT admitted to the ATEP program through regular admission or probationary admission may reapply the next application period or may pursue an academic degree in another major in the School of Human Performance & Recreation.
