Minority Affairs Mission Statement

The University of Southern Mississippi has a rich history of diversity and inclusion. The university boasts having approximately 28 percent minority students enrolled at the institution.

The mission of Minority Affairs at Southern Miss is to provide leadership, direction, and an appreciation for diversity. This mission is accomplished by creating an environment conducive to learning while encouraging collaboration among the various university units.

The Office of Minority Affairs is responsible for providing leadership opportunities in the development and implementation of appropriate experiences and opportunities for students of color.

Services

Leadership Training - The Office of Minority Affairs offers specific leadership training for minority student leaders. Training is accomplished by providing annual workshops for all minority student officers of the minority student organizations. In addition to the leadership training, the office makes an effort to seek out future leaders that are not yet involved in an organization. These students are invited to participate in the leadership services.

In the area of leadership, this office serves as a catalyst to work with the advisers of all these groups, as well as aid all these organizations with problems, concerns, and needs.

For further information on leadership training, contact the office at 266-4025 or 266-6705.

Student Organization Advisement

The Office of Minority Student Development serves as the direct adviser to the Afro American Student Organization - Southern Miss' oldest black student organization, which was founded in 1969 as the Afro American Cultural Society and renamed the Afro American Student Organization in 1991.

Another group created out of the Office of Minority Affairs is SPEED, Students Promoting Educating and Empowering for Diversity. This group was chartered in 1990 for the purpose of peer training in the area of diversity. Membership is open to all students and diversity of members is encouraged.
