Pine Belt EXPO: The Big Read "Teaser" @ The Library's Booth
The Library of Hattiesburg, Petal, and Forrest County will have Big Read materials on display at their booth to "tease" the public about the upcoming fall Big Read event.

Movie Matinee @ The Library of Hattiesburg
The Library of Hattiesburg, Petal and Forrest County will unveil the "Black Bird" prior to showing the 1941 film noir classic based on Dashiell Hammetts novel "The Maltese Falcon." The Friends of the Library will provide refreshments for the matinee. Big Read materials will be distributed and guests will be invited to post "Sam Spade in Six Words" entries in the gallery.

Digital Photo Hunt
The Lamar County Library System is sponsoring a digital photo hunt based upon the twenty chapters in Dashiell Hammett's novel, The Maltese Falcon. Participants are asked to take pictures based upon themes from each chapter's title, as found in the instructions, with a digital camera. Click here for further instructions.

Monday Night Mystery Movie

2010 Big Read Kickoff Event
The Hattiesburg Arts Council sponsors "Live After Five" concerts during the month of October. "Falcon Noir," a jazz group, will play on October 8, 2010, from 5-7:30 p.m. in City Park. Big Read staff will also be on hand to distribute materials about the Big Read including a Calendar of Events, books, reader's guides, CDs, bookmarks, buttons, etc.

Big Read Scholar Event
Mary Anna Evans, a native Hattiesburg, MS, writer, will lecture and read at the Oak Grove Public Library on October 12, 2010. Mary Anna Evans has published Artifacts, Relics, Effigies, and Findings. All four books are Faye Longchamp archaeological mysteries. Effigies was a Book Sense Notable Book. A fifth book Floodgates (also a Faye Longchamp book) has now been published and is set in New Orleans after Katrina. In addition to the scholar talk, the jazz combo Falcon Noir will play while refreshments are served to guests. Big Read staff will be on hand to distribute books, reader's guides, a complete calendar of events, and other materials.

Film Showing @ The Library
The Library of Hattiesburg, Petal and Forrest County celebrates the original film to be made from Dashiell Hammett's "The Maltese Falcon." Filmed in 1931, Roy Del Ruth's film stays close to the book except for a twist at the end. The Friends of The Library will provide movie refreshments and Big Read materials will be distributed.
