Students intent on a
professional career in medicine, dentistry, optometry,
veterinary medicine, dental hygiene, physical therapy,
occupational therapy, cyto-technology and health
information management typically major in Biological
Sciences because they (a) are enthusiastic about the
life sciences and (b) recognize that coursework in the
biological sciences is essential preparation for
professional school.
Students interested in
health professions should contact the College of Science
and Technology’s
Premedical and Health Professions Office located in
Chain Technology 103 and managed by Latandra Cowan.
The pre-professional office provides essential help in
the application process, including the arrangement of
visits by representatives of health professional schools
to campus.
Most medical and dental
schools now require the applicants have up-close,
clinical experience with practitioners. Toward that end,
the College offers the Stephen Hatten Externship Program
for pre-medical students and a comparable dental
externship program for pre-dental students.
Stephen Hatten Premedical
Externship
Available to Jr. and Sr. pre-med students. Applications
and information available JST 720 [Biological Sciences
Office] or TEC 105 in plexiglass display. Most medical
schools require or strongly recommend physician
shadowing experience. The hatten Externship pairs
students with local physicians to obtain such
experience. One hour pass/fail credit is offered as BSC
492.
Dental Externship
Available to Jr. and Sr. pre-dental students. Pairs
students with dentists in six areas of dentistry for
shadowing experience. Such experience is to your
advantage when applying to dental school. Applications
and information available in JST 720 [Department of
Biological Sciences Office] and TEC 105. One hour
pass/fail credit as BSC 492.
