Caribbean Marine Biology: Study marine biology in Jamaica May 12 – 28, 2008 with Dr. Patricia Biesiot. Tropical Ecology in Costa Rica: Students study tropical biology in a traditional lecture format in Hattiesburg for the first two weeks of the First Five Week session of Summer and then embark on a two week trip to Costa Rica where you will be introduced to plants and animals of the tropics, their interactions, and the climatic and geographic features that influence their distributions and adaptations. While in Costa Rica, students will live with locals in the cloud forest near Monteverde, will see first-hand the plants, animals, and interactions discussed in lecture, and will work on an environmental service project in a local community trying to balance conservation and economic development.

Tropical Ecology in Belize: Lecture will meet once a week (Wednesday 5:00 – 7:45p.m.) during the spring semester 2008 and will orient you to the tropical experiences you will encounter upon arrival in Belize. The laboratory phase of the course takes place over two weeks (May 12 – 26, 2008) in the field in Belize, a tropical country, where you will study tropical flora and fauna in several different ecological zones: coral reefs, pine savannahs, rain forests, mangrove swamps.
