Announcing a Big Exhibit

The College of Arts and Letters is playing host to an amazing exhibit of artwork by women of the  Muslim world.  "Breaking the Veils" will open October 6th and run through December 5th. We are holding the exhibit at the fully restored downtown Train Depot (because of its size, good supply of natural light, and availability).  The exhibit first toured Europe, and opened its US tour at the Clinton Presidential Library in Arkansas. From Hattiesburg it will go to the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.  Organized by the ArtReach Foundation of Atlanta, GA, the US tour is meant to show visitors a wide array of perspectives, techniques, and methods by women from all across the cultural Muslim world.  It's not a show about religion, it's a show about people and how similar we are, in spite of cultural, ethnic, religious, or other differences.   The show was made possible in part by a gift from USM alum Dr. Beverly Dale through the Lt. Col John H. Dale, Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series in International Security and Global Policy. A large number of related events surrounding the theme will also take place this fall (with more details to be announced soon).  The image below, "Unity" by Karima Bin Othm of Jordan is one example of work featured in the show. Thumbnails of other works are available on the website linked above.

(Back) in the saddle again!

|
It's been two weeks since I stepped into my own office!

First, I took a week of vacation with my family. We rested, played, and generally did what families are supposed to do on such occasions--we reconnected and enjoyed long stretches of time with one another.

Then, I immediately headed to California for four days of visits with alumni and supporters. It was a whirlwind that included dinner by the Bay and a lunch at a lovely hillside home in San Diego, time spent with a record producer/alum at "the" Capitol Records in LA, and even a visit to the set of the Dr. Phil show with an alum who works as his producer!

Today, academic administrators from the Coast and Hattiesburg joined forces to talk about the short and mid-term needs for programming on the Coast. We all were asked to engage in open and realistic self-evaluation AND even had to share specific goals/plans with the group a-la a twelve-step program ("I pledge ... ").  It was refreshing to spend that much of my time and attention exclusively focused on the Coast and its needs.

Monday, I'll be back to my regular schedule. Refreshed, reinvigorated, and ready to go!

A great day in California

|
John and I met with several California alumni over the last 24 hours or so. Last night we ended our day with a small, but lively group of alumni on the rooftop of the Standard hotel in downtown LA. Today we meet a producer at Paramount Studios, visit with a recording studio owner, and will end having dinner with a college advisory board member who produces independent films. The photo was taken with a blackberry and is a bit grainy, but check out the skyline behind us!

Writing from Sunny California

I'm travelling again. This time, I'm with development officer John Sherk on a trip to reconnect with nearly a dozen college alumni living on the West Coast.  Last night, we ate dinner on the bay in La Jolla with a former dance major and student government officer who today makes her living by producing major concerts for a variety of organizations and corporations.  At the moment, she's working with Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, and the Goo Goo Dolls (what a diverse lineup!).

Throughout our time together, she kept stressing the need for our current students to take advantage of internships, summer jobs, and other opportunities to connect to their dreams. I couldn't agree more. That's why the college is working to create better systems for connecting our students with potential internships and service learning opportunities that--when combined with their solid liberal arts training in research, analysis and communications--will help them prepare for the career marketplace of the future.

Expanding our network of supportive alumni is an important step in the process. Being able to  do the job in a place like San Diego is a real bonus!
