Celebrate

|

What better way to head into the holidays than to celebrate 223 health professionals advancing into careers of service and significance?  Commencement activities were a marvel.  In addition to Friday's main event, three CoH units - Nursing (at both the Gulf Coast and Hattiesburg), Social Work, and Medical Technology - held graduate recognition ceremonies of their own.  Each was a little different; each was joyful and inspirational in its own right.  I was delighted to participate in all, and for the umpteenth time was moved by the power and importance of our instructional mission.  Without the prodigious productivity of the College of Health, I'm convinced that the health and welfare systems of the region would rapidly go on life support, and almost certainly suffer a rapid demise!  In the poorest state in the nation, facing a mountain of desperate health outcomes, can any role be more valuable than ours?

And sandwiched among commencement events was another small wonder of celebration - the CoH holiday open house, held in the aftermath of the Blizzard of '08.  This year's gathering was rendered memorable not merely by the morning's snowfall (!), but by the magical sounds of John Wooten's steel drums, as well as the decorative inventiveness of Dianne Coleman - our very own 'mistress of whimsy.'
