We three deans

|

we-three-deans.jpg
Today's highlight was a trip to Jackson to meet Dr. Peggy Prenshaw (right), dean of the Honors College from 1986 to 1991, who now teaches at Millsaps College. I made the trip with Dr. Maureen Ryan (middle), dean of the Honors College from 1991 to 2002, and Paula Mathis, assistant to the dean for Senior Honors. We made the trip to meet Peggy and to begin planning our first Alumni Weekend April 11-12. We'll hold a banquet April 11 in honor of Maureen's many contributions as dean, and Peggy will say a few words in honor of her successor. The banquet will be a fundraiser for a scholarship in Maureen's name.

Community Advisory Panel

|

Owen Parker A highlight of working in the Honors College is seeing all of the fine work that our students do. Last night I attended a meeting of the Community Advisory Panel, a group organized by Honors student Owen Parker (pictured) through his community organization called Hattiesburg Council for Community Consensus. Owen led the group of community activiists, neighborhood association leaders, pastors and others through a list of action items to submit to the Hattiesburg City Council.

It speaks well for Owen's drive, ambition, and spark that he's organized the panel, which will meet again in a few months. Owen, a Hattiesburg native, majors in social work.

The blog begins

We're setting up an Honors College blog to keep students and alumni informed of developments within the college. While I realize you won't be glued to this site, I do hope you'll check back every now and again for important updates.
