National Collegiate Honors Conference

|

z-four-alamo.jpg san-antonio.jpgThis weekend I'm in San Antonio with four crackerjack Honors College students checking out the national convention of honors programs, the National Collegiate Honors Council.

The convention is absolutely huge -- even a little overwhelming -- but it's useful to come here to get ideas for our Honors College. Universities around the country take a wide range of approaches in offering honors education, so it's interesting to see what other universities are doing.

I took four students along to get a sense of the convention, and I'm so glad I did. Left to right, that's Jennie Thomas, Brian Whitman, Cache Longmire and Jon Barr in the top picture. the students attended a wide range of sessions, and each of us came home pumped up with ideas for our students. We plan to return next year with an even larger group.

I've always had the sense that our Honors College, which is the sixth oldest in the country, is a vital and strong college. I left the NCHC with that convention strongly confirmed. My visits with other deans and program heads confirmed my hunch that our programs are at the leading edge of those offered at the strongest colleges across the country.
