It was like going back to a simpler, happier time in our lives. As we entered the gym of Greene County High School in Leakesville, the sounds and the smells were wonderfully familiar. Students, teachers, friends and colleagues of Randy "Bubba" Pierce were gathered there for his investiture as the newest justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court.
A Southern Miss alum, Randy is a man who has earned his way to the lofty position he now holds. It speaks volumes that he chose his old high school for the swearing in. He has championed education for this state for many years and he wanted to share his finest hour with children who can benefit from his example.
It was a great privilege to be standing on the campus of a Mississippi public school honoring a man who has really demonstrated a commitment to the education of Mississippi's youth. Randy Pierce has always led by example when it comes to education. He never let any of life's challenges stop his trek and he preaches the value of hard work.
His example continued when he was elected to the Mississippi Legislature. Then Representative Pierce quickly became a leader in the area of education. His opinion and leadership was sought out.
Today Justice Pierce continued to demonstrate his commitment to education by allowing me and other educational leaders to share the stage with him....not in a stuffy ball room in a hotel, but on the front line.
I am proud that Southern Miss was able to play a key role in Justice Pierce's education. At Southern Miss, he completed an accounting degree and ultimately became a certified public accountant.
When we write the book of Southern Miss heroes, I have no doubt Bubba Pierce will be included.
