The Center of Higher Learning and the University of Southern Mississippi recently held a retirement reception for Cecil E. Mills.

The former senator was first employed at the John C. Stennis Space Center in 1993, serving as a project director, where he was instrumental in establishing the Technology Transfer Center and securing funding for CHL and the George Knauer Building. Since 1999, Mills has represented CHL, Southern Miss, NASA, Navy and Anteon Corporation in various liaison positions.

A native of Buckatunna who served in the U.S. Army, Mills was elected to serve in the Mississippi State Senate in 1979 and re-elected four terms until his departure in 1992.

Friends, colleagues and family gathered for the reception that celebrated Mills' many contributions to Stennis Space Center and Southern Miss. Event highlights included remarks from Southern Miss President Martha Saunders, presentation of gifts and the unveiling of Mills' photo to be hung in the CHL Visualization Center.
