Southern Miss School of Computing Names Zhang Interim Director

Dr. Chaoyang "Joe" Zhang, an associate professor in the University of Southern Mississippi's College of Science and Technology has been named interim director of the college's School of Computing

Zhang teaches courses in numerous areas of computing including parallel and distributed computing, computer organization, Java programming language, and database design. His research interests include high-performance computing, 3-D image reconstruction, data mining, computational biology and bioinformatics.

Zhang also has served as major adviser to four doctoral and several masters' students, in addition to advising undergraduates.

"Dr. Zhang is well qualified to provide leadership to the School of Computing. He brings a breadth of experience and proven team-building ability to the directorship. The college is fortunate to have him in this important role," said Dr. Rex Gandy, dean of the College of Science and Technology.

In 2005, Zhang was the recipient of the Sylvia Sorken Greenfield Award, presented by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. He served as principle investigator and and co-principle investigator of several research projects funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Army, totaling more than $1 million. 

The School of Computing has more than 700 students and offers a diverse series of programs centered on computing. It is active in research and education at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as outreach and actively partners with industry exploring and developing innovative applications utilizing emerging information technologies.
