MY first year experience!

Hey everybody, my name is Daniel.  My first week of school, even though it was jam packed, was everything that I could have ever expected.  I am a transfer student and because I have been so excited about Southern Miss. for so long, I am ready to handle anything the world can throw at me.  Between my professors, my friends, and my fellow co-workers and faculty, the entire first year experience started off great.

I arrived on Southern Miss' campus on the 7th of August for my Residence Life training.  I am a Resident Assistant in the McCarty Complex on the Men's 2nd floor.  I had just enough time to move my stuff in my room before I was snatched up and taken to Scott Hall to begin my training.  It was a pretty extensive and intensive training.  Day after day, the staff drilled policy and procedure into our heads about how to handle situations in the line of duty.  Because of our great leaders, check in for the McCarty Complex went great.  I had my first floor meeting with my fellow residents on Tuesday night and I really think that I have a solid crew.  They asked tons of great questions and I had a great time sitting down and getting to know them.  My fellow RA's are a blast and with our cooperative residents, our community building process is going to thrive. You see, at Southern Miss, we build community in out residence halls.  It's much more than a dormitory.

Aside from being a Resident Assistant, being a student has already been an adventure.  I have already had to adjust my class schedule due to incorrect course numbering and conflicting work schedules.  Luckily, the staff in the Speech Communication department of the Liberal Arts Building fixed my problem in a speedy manner with smiles on their faces.  Due to the student to teacher ratio being 24 to 1, things like scheduling problems or check in problems are solved quickly.

I can't wait to dig deeper into the Southern Miss experience.
