Overview
The Center for Economic Education (CEE-USM), one branch of the Bureau of Business and Economics Research (BBER) within the College of Business (CoB) at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Purpose
The CEE's purpose is to serve as an academic resource for public and private schools, K-12 teachers and students, and adult learners in south Mississippi. The specific purpose of the CEE-USM will be the promotion of a greater understanding of economics and the U.S. economic system through educational outreach activities and research. The center is founded on the belief that economic and financial literacy are necessary components of any successful program to promote economic growth.

The CEE-USM will conduct economic education professional development programs for K-12 teachers and serve in a consulting capacity with public and private school systems in south Mississippi. Such activities will not be directed toward the achievement of the purposes of any particular interest group, but will emphasize factual, comprehensive and nonpartisan programs stressing widely recognized principles of economics.

Mission Statement
The University of Southern Mississippi Center for Economic Education promotes local economic understanding, and subsequent growth, in communities throughout south Mississippi through the production and delivery of economic education programs and research.

Services

  • Professional development programs and continuing education courses for K-12 teachers assigned to implement Mississippi’s required economics curriculum;
  • Consultation to public and private schools concerning how to implement, manage, and assess Mississippi’s required economics curriculum;
  • Educational outreach programs for the general public which promote an understanding and appreciation of the U.S. economic system;
  • Programs to promote and encourage sound financial habits, including saving and investment, by households throughout south Mississippi;
  • Research expertise for the assessment and evaluation of economics education projects and programs; and,
  • Original economics education and financial literacy research to support public policymakers and local economic planning officials.
