Center for Financial Services Activities

  • The primary activity of the center is to provide an active learning environment where students are able to develop knowledge and skills in investment advising, portfolio management, stock analysis, real estate valuation and financial planning.

  • Students use the finance lab to participate in managing the Student Investment Fund and have maintained a return consistent with the S&P 500 benchmark since August 2003.  The original $200,000 corpus of the fund is part of the USM Foundation endowment.  The current portfolio balance is over $315,000.

  • The Center successfully renewed its appointment as a CFP Board registered program in 2007.  This permits USM to offer both an undergraduate degree program and a non-credit certificate program that allows students to sit for the CFP Exam.

  • Scholarships continue to be funded through donor gifts.

  • The “Common Financial Planning Mistakes” seminar developed by the Center has been delivered to numerous student and community groups.

  • The Center Received a grant from the Citigroup/Primerica Foundation to provide programs to education majors to better prepare them for teaching personal finance skills in the classroom.  As part of the grant, some of our financial planning students delivered a seminar on “The Basics of Financial Planning and Employee Benefits for Teachers” to all of the students completing their student teaching in the Spring 2007 semester.
