Ms. Mackenzie obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Miami, Cum Laude, in 1998, and earned her undergraduate degree in social science education, with honors, from the University of South Florida in 1993. Ms. Mackenzie is licensed to practice law in Mississippi and is admitted to practice before numerous state and federal courts, as well as before the Mississippi Gaming Commission.
Ms. Mackenzie joined Gulfside Casino Partnership d/b/a Copa Casino in 2000 as its General Counsel and was promoted to Vice President in 2002. Copa Casino was originally housed within a converted 1950s vintage cruise ship which was severely damaged by an on-board fire in March of 2001. Ms. Mackenzie was co-counsel on the litigation arising out of the fire and settled the matter sufficiently to fund the acquisition and rehabilitation of the new Copa Casino barge which opened in September, 2002 at the Port of Gulfport.
The new Copa Casino was later destroyed in Hurricane Katrina and Ms. Mackenzie, as sole counsel for Gulfside and without filing a lawsuit, recovered 100% of the insurance proceeds insuring the Copa Casino barge and landside improvements before the end of December, 2005.
Ms. Mackenzie has served as lead transactional counsel on numerous syndicated bank financings, beginning with a $25mm credit facility in 2003 to a $35mm bridge financing which closed in early 2006, on the same day Ms. Mackenzie, as lead transactional counsel for Gulfside, closed the asset acquisition of the former Grand Casino-Gulfport from seller Harrah’s Entertainment. The newly acquired property was renamed Island View Casino Resort and phase 1 opened in September 2006. Ms. Mackenzie was the first attorney to obtain site approval from MGC for a permanent, land based structure using the new land-based gaming law, commonly referred to as the 800’ rule, which was passed by the Mississippi legislature in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Later in 2006, Ms. Mackenzie served as lead transactional counsel on the $235mm syndicated bank credit facility with UBS and Merrill Lynch which was used fund the rehab and ground-up expansion Island View Casino, as well as negotiating the over $175mm guaranteed maximum construction contract with the general contractor for the Island View project. In 2007, Ms. Mackenzie again served as lead transactional counsel in refinancing Gulfside’s debt with a $252mm credit facility with Wells Fargo Bank serving as the lead arranger, as well as the extension and amendment of that same facility in 2012.
Ms. Mackenzie is a licensed real estate broker in Mississippi, and, along with her husband Jason, they own a real estate brokerage and investment firm, Mackenzie Properties, LLC. In 2011, the Mackenzie’s opened a boutique inn located in downtown Ocean Springs known as Front Beach Cottages.
Ms. Mackenzie was born in Miami Beach, Florida and presently resides in Ocean Springs, Mississippi with her husband, Jason, and their two daughters, Cassidy and Camille.
