About this Bachelor's Degree

The Casino Resort Management major develops decision-making, financial, and strategic management skills appropriate for careers in the casino and resort industries.  Students develop an understanding of the stakeholders and industry practices necessary for success in entry-level managerial positions in the gaming industry or other general business sectors.

Few careers offer the great diversity and lifestyle options of tourism management majors. Graduates are successfully employed in entry-level management positions that have strong career paths at highly competitive salaries.

With the assistance of professors, students find engaging and challenging international employment directly in the primary hospitality sectors such as:

  • Convention industry resorts

Southern Miss was the first university in the state of Mississippi officially designated by the state Institutes of Higher Learning to offer this major, and even today is one of very few with the program. The department was founded in the mid-1960s and over the years has built a strong reputation as the place to come for a hospitality degree.

As long as there are leisure and business travelers, there will be a vibrant hospitality industry. Even during recessionary periods, there are travelers and therefore jobs for those who have a passion for people and service, which are at the core of this industry.

Learning Outcomes/Objectives

  • Students wil define important business and casino industry terms, acronyms and concepts and be able to use and apply them in appropriate industry context.

  • Students completing the program will demonstrate values, attitudes and behaviors that reflect cultural sensitivity, professional ethics, social responsibility and traditional business practices.

  • Students will possess the ability to organize and present precise and clear verbal instructions, deliver verbal reports and demonstrate effective oral communication skills traditionally required of managers in casino and resort management positions and within traditional business and service environments.

  • Students will possess the ability to produce well-constructed written business communications such as reports and documents (inc. electronic) traditionally found in casino and resort management positions.

  • Students completing the program will demonstrate the requisite level of information and communication technology skills such as the use of Office productivity tools, data analytic tools and the Internet as well as skills in time management and multi-tasking.

  • Students will demonstrate the ability to generate something fundamentally new out of their creative thinking process or put existing elements together in a new system, format, or structure to improve upon what already exist.
