Mr. Brown is a Certified Public Accountant and is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, Mississippi Society of CPAs, and is an educator associate member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. He serves on the Awards, Education, and Scholarship committee of the Mississippi Society of CPAs and is the coordinator of the accounting internship program at USMGC. He has accounting experience in both public practice and industry and maintains a consulting practice providing tax and forensic accounting services. His teaching areas include financial, cost, tax, managerial and governmental accounting.

Mr. Brown has served as a member of the Board of Governors and as president of the Southwest Chapter of the Mississippi Society of CPAs. He has been published in Tax Notes, a national publication of Tax Analysts.

Professor Hughes is a retired naval officer and a Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM). He has published in several scholarly journals, including The Accounting Review, Accounting, Organizations and Society, Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of Information Systems, and the Journal of Forensic Accounting. Additionally, Hughes has published over 40 articles on the electric utility industry. He has been honored in receiving the Sigma Phi Epsilon Outstanding Professor Award in 2007 and the C. Brenner Endowed Faculty Research Award in 2000 and 2002.

He is the co-author of a managerial accounting textbook now in it’s fourth edition published by Thomson/SouthWestern. He is currently the editor of the Journal of Accounting and Finance Research.

Professional Honors and Achievements
He has received six outstanding teaching awards at Arizona State University and the University of Southern Mississippi, two outstanding research awards from The University of Tennessee at Martin and The University of Southern Maine. He has held distinguished professorships at The University of Tennessee at Martin and Loyola University New Orleans where he was also the director of the accounting program. He also held an Endowed Chair at the University of Tennessee at Martin. He has been listed in Who’s Who among America’s Teachers and Who’s Who in Business Higher Education.
