Teaching Philosophy
As I reflect upon my teaching, it is very clear to me that my pedagogical stance has been tremendously influenced by my mentors. Throughout my academic tenure, my mentors have helped me to improve my ability of critical thinking, analytical skills, and articulating ideas by using different methods such as demonstrating, discussing, questioning, listening, and stimulating. Their efforts provided me two insightful lessons that I would like to impart to my students: 1) to do help students understand their subject matter and be successful not only in the classroom, but also in life, and 2) to be available to students. These are my exemplars when I teach. Teaching for me is equipping my students with the necessary tools for real life. It is purposeful not just to acquire knowledge but to know how to apply that knowledge in different circumstances. For me the best teacher is one who simplifies difficult material and makes it practical to understand. Material taught in such a way will be engrafted into students' hearts and they will never forget what they have learned in the classroom. I establish a classroom environment that is pleasurable and non-threatening atmosphere because I believe students learn better in a positive environment.
Research Statement
Conducting research does not answer the “why” questions but the results assist me to know “how” things the way they are. It explores my creativity, and stretched me by testing my thoughts and theories I have learned. My utmost goal for research is to conduct research that benefit others by bridging the gap within and between the disciplines, providing a resourceful information for retailers to improve their retail environment and in turn increase customer satisfaction, and sharing my AHA moment with them as they read my papers.
In the future, I would like to continue to increase the horizon of my world view. Hence, I would like to expand my research by cooperative study with domestic and international scholars. Since my long-term goal is to continue research related to color and light in industry applications, I also would like to establish a good relationship with international colleagues by conducting cross culture study focusing on color measurement and communication, retail environment, retail lighting, and instrument color measurement. My long-term plans include exploring the consistency of illuminants in retail stores, examining the light that yields the least color difference, and conducting both cross-culture and multidisciplinary research regarding color and light.
All research will be closely tied with the industry in order to anticipate their real-world problems and to exchange innovations of technology and techniques. Furthermore, I plan to take the initiative to work with lighting manufacturers, lighting engineers, interior designers and architects for exchanging skill and information, and conducting research together. My research will include empirical studies of the importance of multidisciplinary research in order to further improve and bridge the knowledge and information on color and lighting.
