Research Grants

Not Funded-External

2007 - Bristol, D. & Zantow, K., "Success after Disaster: Identifying Critical Needs for Small Business Recovery," This project is an exploratory investigation that seeks to identify factors critical to small businesses recovery after natural disasters. In particular, this interdisciplinary study will examine the recovery of locally-owned restaurants along the Mississippi Gulf Coast from Hurricane Camille in 1969 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Locally-owned restaurants merit study because they give southern Mississippi a flavor that appeals to tourists, attract new residents, and provide an important service to existing residents, making these businesses important to regional economic development. This study combines contemporary and historical assessment of the impact of hurricanes on the local restaurant industry with in-depth research on the resources and services that were critical to the successful recovery of these small businesses. Our goals are to develop recommendations for disaster planning and recovery, and to develop an agenda for further research on these issues., Rand Gulf States Policy Institute, ( $124,729).
