The Center for Black Studies and the College of Arts and Letters, in collaboration with the City of Hattiesburg, Hattiesburg Historic Downtown Association and the Hattiesburg Convention are hosting Freedom Summer Dialogues each month from February to May. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Summer, when more than 1000 volunteers came to Mississippi from across the nation in 1964 to launch an unprecedented voter registration drive for African Americans, the Freedom Summer Dialogues will feature guest speakers who will share their insight on Freedom Summer.
Guest speaker, Mrs. Jeanette Smith, will discuss The Role of Women in the Movement.
This event is free and open to the public.
Images of Freedom Summer volunteers were captured by famed civil rights movement photographer Herbert Randall. (From the Herbert Randall collection)
