David Lewis will present a gallery lecture on the works and life of American artist John Heliker (1909-2000) and the traveling exhibiton John Heliker: Drawing on the New Deal, 1932—1948.
David A. Lewis holds a BA in Art and Philosophy (Cum Laude) from the University of Southern Indiana, and both MA and Ph.D. degrees in Art History from Indiana University, Bloomington. Dr. Lewis has taught art history at Hamilton College, the University of Georgia, and the University of Southern Indiana. Dr. Lewis is currently a Professor of Art History at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA), where he teaches courses in Modern European and American art, the history of photography, and the print in the Western tradition.
David Lewis is the general editor of LaNana Creek Press and serves as art editor for Stephen F. Austin State University Press. Dr. Lewis was SFA Art Department Chair (2002 -2005) and the first Director of the School of Art (2005-2007), and he recently initiated a Graduate Certificate Program in Museum Studies.
Dr. Lewis has organized many exhibitions, including retrospectives of watercolors by the English Vorticist, Dorothy Shakespear Pound (1886-1973), paintings and drawings by the American expressionist Rico Lebrun (1900-64) and works in sculpture, painting, drawing and printmaking by Texas artist, John Daniel.
In addition to curating the traveling exhibition, John Heliker: Drawing on the New Deal, 1932—1948, he has also organized two exhibitions of contemporary photography: Rastlin’, a Southern Survey: Photographs by David McClister, and Frank Dituri: ‘Of Things Not Seen’.” Dr. Lewis has published interviews with Doug & Mike Starn, Donald Sultan, Sandy Skoglund, Jerry Uelsmann and Maggy Talyor, The Art Guys (Michael Galbreth and Jack Massing), and Mel Chin in catalogue for the Texas National annual exhibitions. Lewis is the recipient of several grants, including awards from the Edward and Betty Marcus Foundation and the Kirkland Endowment.
