Eligibility Requirements
  • To submit to Catalyst, your research must have been conducted during a full-time or part-time undergraduate study at The University of Southern Mississippi. If you are a graduate student at any school, your research must have been conducted during a full-time or part-time undergraduate study at Southern Miss since the last publication of Catalyst.
  • To submit to Volume 1, Issue 5 of Catalyst, your research must have been conducted during the spring semester of 2005 or later. ELI students are eligible.
  • Your submission should reflect an experience in which you participated while attending Southern Miss. This can include off-campus experiences such as internships.
  • No articles co-authored with a graduate student or faculty member will be accepted. However, abstracts of these articles with descriptions of the programs under which they are written are acceptable.
  • Your submission must be completed and mailed according to the submission quidelines. Our review board will begin reviewing submitted articles beginning October 1, 2007, and will continue to accept submissions until March 7, 2008. All submissions must be recieved by March 7, 2008, to be considered.

These requirements are for the fall 2007 issue and are subject to change for future issues of Catalyst.

Submission Guidelines

  • Submissions must fall into one of three categories:
    1. Original Research--ranging from the traditional (but exceptionally researched) term paper to creative, original projects in the arts and sciences.
    2. Contemporary Commentary--critical review and evaluation of a contemporary issue or breakthrough analized through the lens of one’s discipline, or an academic review of new “texts” in one’s field of interest
    3. This includes reviews of programs and guidance currently available at Southern Miss, such as study-abroad and service-learning narratives. Reseach or externships programs attended outside of Southern Miss during one’s undergraduate career at Southern Miss may also be included.
  • The application cover sheet can be found here or in any current paper issue of Catalyst. It may also be found in the Office of Student Affairs (Admin. 104), the Office of Research and Economic Development (Admin. 202), the Honors College (International Center301), or from your department.
  • The application sheet must be submitted with two hard copies and a 3.5 diskette of the article in Microsoft Word format. Please include a cover sheet with the title of the work and the date submitted. Do not put any identifying marks on the hard copies; this is essential in order for the review board to conduct a blind reading of submissions.
  • Articles submitted must follow an established style manual (MLA, APA, etc.). The style used must be indicated on the application sheet.
  • Preference will be given to articles under 2,000 words. Due to the limits of journal publication, longer articles may need to be edited after selection.
  • Supplementary materials are encouraged. Digital photos are preferred, as well as Windows compatible photos.
  • The top three articles in the following categories will receive a cash prize of $50: Original Research, Contemporary Commentary, and External Experience.
The deadine for submission for the fall 2006 issue is September 15.

Articles may be mailed to:
