Civic Engagement Seminar

Module 5: Community

Concept
The topic of this module is about the meaning of "community". The concept of community is viewed differently by everyone. Some people believe that a community is a group of people who share a public space-such as a neighborhood. Others claim that "community" includes any group of people in any one place that work together (i.e., a neighborhood, a classroom, a group founded on diversity, a church, etc). By working through this module, you will explore what community means to you, and learn what it means to others.

Pre-flective Activity
Part A: Think about the concept of community. Is it possible to define a community without excluding others? Record your thoughts about community in your journal.

Part B: Interview at least 5 members of the community. Ask them to define community and identify what they believe are assets and the greatest needs of their community. Keep interview notes in your journal.
