The Southern Miss SURE

An NSF REU in Chemistry and Biochemistry

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The University of Southern Mississippi is continuing its Summer Undergraduate Research Experience for undergraduates who will begin their senior year in the fall of 2009. This program is designed to allow undergraduate students from other universities with little or no research experience to conduct graduate-level research on the USM campus in Hattiesburg under the direction of a faculty member in the Department during the summer of 2009. Fellowship recipients will receive a $4,500 stipend for the 10 week summer session and paid on-campus lodging. Supplemental travel funds are available for those traveling long distances. The program is intended for students with an interest in chemistry or biochemistry as a career. Students interested primarily in medical, pharmacy, dental or other pre-professional schools are encouraged to look to those schools for summer opportunities. Please note also that the program is restricted to US citizens and permanent residents. The faculty of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at USM are involved in a variety of research activities in the areas of biochemistry, analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. Research laboratories in the Johnson Science Tower and Chain Technology Center are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and the faculty are experienced in including undergraduate researchers alongside graduate and postdoctoral fellows in their research teams. Participants will attend weekly research meetings and make a formal presentation at the final minisymposium. Scheduled social activities over the summer will include the opening reception, a Saturday canoe trip, and the ending barbecue held the afternoon after the minisymposium. The students will be provided with an information packet by the Hattiesburg Visitors Bureau listing local and regional activities such as golf courses, Gulf Coast beaches and islands, New Orleans sites and activities, recreational sports, etc. In addition, participants will have access to the USM Payne Center , a nationally recognized fitness center.

About us

The USM Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is an ACS-accredited department granting B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The department currently has fifteen budgeted tenure-track faculty positions, three instructors, one visiting professor, three joint faculty with other departments, and three staff scientists. The department will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2009.

The department boasts an excellent undergraduate program with ca 150 undergrad majors, all of whom participate in undergraduate research. Emphasis areas in the undergraduate curriculum include chemistry, biochemistry, ACS-certified chemistry, ACS-certified biochemistry, and ACS-certified chemical education (with licensure). There is an active ACS student affiliates group. A large percentage of majors are in the USM Honors College, and several have been Presidential and/or Goldwater Scholars. Graduates have gone on to prestigious graduate and medical schools including Baylor, Emory, Vanderbilt, Harvard, MIT, UT Southwestern, Virginia Tech, and the University of Virginia. Scholarships are available through the department, as well as through the college and the university. Almost all teaching laboratories are recently renovated and new science auditoriums contain state-of-the-art instructional technology.

The University of Southern Mississippi was founded in 1910 in the city of Hattiesburg. Located in South Mississippi, the Greater Hattiesburg Area is the educational, cultural, industrial, retail and medical center for more than 250,000 people. The greater metropolitan statistical area has a population of over 100,000. The area is still surrounded by forests of southern yellow pines and is intersected by four major U.S. and interstate highways. The cities of Jackson, New Orleans, Meridian and Mobile are within 100 miles and the Mississippi Gulf Coast is only 60 miles to the south. Two local hospitals and several large medical specialty clinics serve the medical needs of much of south Mississippi. The local newspaper is the Hattiesburg American, whose website contains a brief synopsis of area communities and the local schools.
