William (Bill) Derwostyp

Bill Derwostyp started work with computers in the late 1970s installing min-computers for N.A.P.A. (Genuine Auto Parts). He then earned an associate degree in electronics. This led to a job working (contract) for Texaco in New Orleans as a desktop support technician. Derwostyp worked with the network team at Texaco and eventually took a position managing the network. He was then offered a job with Compaq Computers in Houston.. He worked as a network support person for Compaq’s customers for about a year when the contract company he had left called and made him an offer to work in their Houston office. After a few years, Derwostyp moved to a company called Administaff as the operation/security manager of 42 offices across the U.S. and a data center that contained more than 400 computers (Windows and UNIX). After some budget cuts, he moved to Hattiesburg to become the security manager for iTech at Southern Miss.

 

What does the Technology Security Officer do?

  • Responsible for data security across all departments and campuses
  • Work with the Legal department doing forensics work to support ongoing cases
  • Work with Comptroller’s office supporting third-party audits
  • Verify Compliance to federal, state and local regulations

 

List of accomplishments while at Southern Miss:

  • Chair of the university’s Policy and Compliance Committee
  • Purchased and installed CopySense appliance that monitors and tracks illegal downloads of music and movies
  • Trained staff in forensics
  • Security Awareness program
  • Installed a system that has significantly reduced the amount of e-mail spam received by faculty and staff
  • Added video surveillance and access control to Forrest County Hall

 

Technology Audit and Security Staff
