Department Chairperson
The Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education (CISE) at The University of Southern Mississippi seeks a highly motivated academic leader to serve as department chair. The tenure-track position is a 12-month appointment beginning July 1, 2008. The chair is responsible to the department, serving as the executive officer and primary representative of the department both internally and externally, and reports directly to the dean.
Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in a relevant area of education; a strong record of scholarly achievement and teaching; and an established record as a successful administrator, with a minimum of three years of administrative experience. Preferred candidates will be skillful in budget planning and management, securing outside funding, and promoting successful relationships with State Departments of Education and with other public and/or private agencies. The successful candidate will have effective interpersonal and communication skills that promote collegiality among faculty and staff. Additionally, experience with NCATE and/or other accreditation agencies is desirable.
The department includes 30 full-time faculty - 25 on the campus in Hattiesburg, MS, and 5 on the Gulf Coast campus in Long Beach, MS. CISE offers bachelor’s degrees in elementary and special education; master’s degrees in elementary, secondary and special education; specialist’s degrees in elementary, secondary and special education and doctoral degrees in elementary, secondary and special education. The successful candidate will have an appreciation for the broad spectrum of disciplines within the department.

Qualifications:
Earned doctorate in elementary education or early childhood education or closely related field; strong background and experience in theory and pedagogy; evidence of research and scholarly productivity; at least three years teaching or supervisory experience in P-12 schools; demonstrated ability to lead professional development for schools and school districts; expertise in early literacy education curriculum and instructional strategies; firm grounding in methodology, theory, practice and research.

Teaching undergraduate and graduate elementary or early childhood courses; advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students; supervising field and clinical experiences; building collaborative relationships with K-12 faculties; conducting, presenting and publishing scholarly research; providing service to the department, the university and the community; and securing internal and external funding sources.

Qualifications:
Doctorate in reading instruction or curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in literacy and language arts. Expertise in literacy and language arts curricula and instructional strategies. ABD will be considered if dissertation proposal has been approved by Aug. 1, 2007. A minimum of three years’ K-12 teaching experience is required. Experience in teaching at the university level is preferred.

Qualifications:
Earned doctorate (ABD considered) in special education or closely related field; state or national credential in the field of special education; a minimum of three years’ experience teaching special education in P-12 school settings; experience and expertise in the field of mild or moderate disabilities; experience in applications of technology to teach IVN and WebCT; demonstrated experience in working with diverse populations; excellent interpersonal communication skills; and ability to work with faculty and students across program areas.
Preferred Qualifications: demonstrated capacity in obtaining external funding and administering funded projects; demonstrated research and publishing capacity; expertise or experience in inclusive settings; at least one year of postdoctoral experience.
