Message from the Chair

On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education (CISE), I welcome you to our Website.
Since 1910, The University of Southern Mississippi has served as the flagship
for teacher education in our state.  Our professors are highly respected as
leaders in research and service as it relates to preparing future teachers.
Our graduates hold teaching positions across the globe and are proud and confident because of the foundation they received at Southern Miss.

CISE offers degree programs that lead to licensure in Elementary
Education (K-6) and Special Education (K-12) and provides undergraduate
and graduate coursework for both pre-service and in-service teachers.  In addition, CISE offers a dual license program whereby graduates attain an elementary teacher’s license (K-6) and a special education teacher’s license (Mild-Moderate K-6).  This program focuses on preparing teachers for
meeting the needs of exceptional students in the general education classroom.  CISE has initiated an online teacher education program that enables teacher assistants in public schools to maintain their positions while completing their
degree requirements.  The online and dual programs are the only one of
their kind in Mississippi.  Graduate degrees offered through CISE include
Master of Science, Master of Education, Educational Specialist, and Ph.D.

We in The Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education
take great pride in our role as a premier teacher education program. We
invite you to explore your possibilities in the field of education and join us
as we prepare teachers for the 21st century.
