Nonprofit Studies Minor

The Nonprofit Studies Minor is an interdisciplinary minor which provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for work in the nonprofit sector. This minor is appropriate for students in all colleges and majors who wish to pursue a variety of career choices, from research and advocacy to the arts to health and social services provision.

The Nonprofit Studies minor is affiliated with the American Humanics program at Southern Miss. American Humanics "is a non-profit management certificate program educating, preparing and certifying professionals to strengthen and lead nonprofit organizations" (http://www.humanics.org).

Students who are pursuing the Nonprofit Studies minor may also pursue American Humanics certification if they choose. Students gain certification by 1) taking classes and/or workshops at their university to complete designated non-profit competencies, 2) completing a 300 hour internship with a national or local non-profit, 3) attending the American Humanics Management Institute, and 4) participating in their university's American Humanics student association.

A minimum of eighteen (18) total hours is required for the minor, including one course each from areas 1-5 and one course from 6a or 6b. Students can access SOAR for the schedule of classes each semester.
