Curriculum

The department offers undergraduate curricula from beginning through advanced levels in French, Spanish and German. The department also offers Greek, Latin, and Russian through the second-year levels, with occasional offerings in Chinese, Italian, and Japanese. In addition to varied opportunities for language study on campus, the department also offers possibilities for short- and long-term study abroad in collaboration with the USM International Programs office.

At the graduate level, the department offers a program of study leading to the master of arts in the teaching of languages degree (MATL) with emphases in Spanish, French, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). This unique program is designed particularly for the needs of elementary, middle, high school, and community college teachers who are in search of a practical graduate study program. The focus of the MATL is on developing and enhancing the knowledge and skills in language, language acquisition, and language instruction that are essential for both effective teaching and successful learning.
