As a nationally recognized teaching and research university, Southern Miss offers students a comprehensive array of programs. The College of Arts and Letters plays a critical role in the university. Within the college on the Hattiesburg and Gulf Park campuses are 15 departments, schools, and centers for excellence encompassing a variety of important disciplines in the arts, humanities, social sciences, human environmental sciences, international education, and communication, including both Aerospace Studies (Air Force ROTC) and Military Science (Army ROTC).

Our faculty of artist-teachers, educators, and scholars have received recognition at the highest national and international levels. Majors in any of the Arts and Letters disciplines at Southern Miss have the opportunity to work closely with some of the most accomplished educators and professionals in your selected field.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS

TEACHING LICENSURE
NCATE-certified preparation programs for secondary teachers are available in art, dance, English, foreign languages and music. History majors are certified in social studies. As part of their programs, prospective teachers take a carefully selected curriculum of professional education courses, plus a term of supervised practice teaching.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
International Programs offers a variety of summer, semester, and year-long credit abroad programs designed to furnish students with opportunities for personal and academic enrichment. We are committed to providing challenging, rewarding, and affordable programs to students in preparation for life in an interdependent global environment. Hundreds of Arts and Letters students have enrolled for courses in such places as the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Italy, Austria, Mexico, Jamaica, Japan, Spain, and Australia. An international experience is a great enhancement to a university education, and Southern Miss heads a 16-university consortium to make travel abroad possible and affordable.

Both detachments have two-year and four-year programs that lead to a a commission as a second lieutenant in the armed forces. In addition, a general military program offers a number of elective courses that allows students the opportunity to learn about military life and national security. Competitive scholarships are available to qualified students.
