Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy

The B.A. in philosophy provides a strong grounding for students who are interested in pursuing graduate studies in philosophy. The major is also attractive to many students who seek a broad liberal arts background in preparation for professional studies in fields such as law, medicine, business, or theology. The major in philosophy requires thirty semester hours, including PHI 151 (Introduction to Philosophy), PHI 253 (Logic), PHI 356 (Ethics), PHI 410 (Classical Philosophy), PHI 412 (Modern Philosophy), PHI 480 (Philosophical Discourse), and three hours from religion.

Bachelor of Arts in Religion

The Bachelor of Arts in religion is an interdisciplinary major that, in addition to courses in the Department of Philosophy and Religion, has elective options in fields including anthropology, English, history, psychology, and sociology. Besides appealing to students interested in graduate studies in religion or theology, this major develops skills that are valuable for a variety of professional fields. The religion major requires thirty semester hours including REL 131 (Comparative Religion), PHI 372: (Philosophy of Religion), a course in a Western religious tradition, a course in an Eastern religious tradition, REL 432 (Mysticism) or 447 (Dreams in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), and fifteen elective hours in religion or designated courses on religion topics from other departments.
