The department is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Offering a variety of degree programs involving both traditional and high-tech media, students may choose from two undergraduate degrees: the bachelor of arts, a broadly based liberal arts program offered in museum studies and art, or the bachelor of fine arts, a program for professional career preparation in drawing and painting, graphic communication (graphic design, commercial art, advertising design), art education (teacher training), and three dimensional design (sculpture, ceramics). Minor programs are available in art. Graduate degrees include a master of fine arts in drawing and painting and a master of art education. Professional and student exhibitions are continuously on view at the university’s Museum of Art.
The interior design undergraduate curriculum is accredited by the Foundation for Interior Design Education Research (FIDER), and endorsed by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). The major prepares students to identify, research, and solve problems related to the needs of people in residential, institutional, and commercial environments, with an emphasis on enhancing quality of life and the protection of public health, safety, and welfare.
