The History Department is the second largest in the College of Arts and Letters. Our faculty members hold doctoral degrees from some of the most prestigious institutions in the United States and have earned numerous teaching and research excellence awards over the past two decades. Many faculty members enjoy national and international reputations in their field of expertise. Yet the department prides itself on a strong commitment to teaching and individual counseling of students. We offer a broad range of courses not only in United States and European history but in the history of Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
The Department of History offers programs at the bachelor, master, and doctoral levels. Undergraduate students may choose either a traditional history degree or a history degree with teaching licensure in social studies. History majors often pursue careers in education, law, public service, business, or any profession that requires writing, reasoning, research, and analytical skills. The department is recognized nationally for its strong program in Southern history, and is also committed to the fostering of international understanding, offering courses on every region of the world and taught by experts.
