About the Department

Courses in political science introduce students to issues related to government, the law, political parties, campaigns, interest groups, and the media. Faculty members of the political science department hold doctoral degrees, and their interests include international politics, comparative government, political theory, political institutions, political economy, state and local government, and popular political culture. Students who graduate with a degree in political science have career opportunities in government, teaching, the legal profession, and the media, among others.

The interdisciplinary undergraduate American Studies program is housed in the Politicial Science Department with courses offered from English, history, political science, and a variety of disciplines. The interdisciplinary ABA-approved Paralegal Studies program is also housed in the political science department and offers instruction by both paralegals and lawyers.

The department also offers a Ph.D. in international development.
