While commencement ceremonies are celebrations for students and families, they are also ceremonial reminders of traditions of the academic institution, and faculty members have an important role.

SCHEDULE FOR 10 A.M. CEREMONY

8:30 a.m.Reed Green Coliseum and Payne Center open for volunteers
9 a.m.Baccalaureate students line up in Payne Center gym floor
9 a.m.Master's, specialist's & doctoral students line up in Speech & Hearing Sciences building
9 a.m.Hooding faculty check in at Speech and Hearing Sciences building
9:30 a.m.Non-hooding faculty assemble in Payne Center west hallway
9:45 a.m.Platform party assemble in Payne Center – Oak Room
10 a.m.Processional begins

1 p.m.Volunteers, floor marshals and standard bearers report to Payne Center

Faculty Regalia
Faculty participants are required to wear appropriate academic regalia. Faculty members have the option of wearing their own regalia, renting regalia or purchasing regalia through the Barnes & Noble Bookstore at Southern Miss.Please contact the bookstore at 601.266.4381.

The regalia can be picked up at the Barnes & Noble @ Southern Miss in the Thad Cochran Center, for Hattiesburg candidates and faculty, beginning Tuesday, May 8, through Thursday, May 10, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Volunteer Staff, Floor Marshals & Standard Bearers
Volunteer staff and Floor Marshals are asked to wear solid white shirts and black pants/skirt to aid students in identifying assistants.  Standard Bearers will need to wear their appropriate academic regalia for the procession.

Faculty Parking
All university parking lots, unless otherwise marked, will be open to the public on the day of Commencement. Handicap parking will be on the west side of M. K. Turk Circle.  Parking for the platform and VIP guests will be on the southeast side of M.K. Turk Circle. The Southern Miss parking garage adjacent to West 4th Street will be open for commencement parking. See the printable map (PDF) detailing available parking areas on campus.

Faculty Check-in and Lineup (Download 1-page PDF)
Non-hooding Faculty will check in at the Payne Center by 9:30 a.m. for the 10 a.m. ceremony and 2 p.m. for the 2:30 p.m. ceremony. Faculty will be grouped by college on the first floor of Payne Center in the west hallway.  Faculty members will process as a group; then later recess to their college tents on Pride Field. Please be reminded that personal items may not be secured in the Payne Center; thus, personal items are discouraged.

Hooding Professors
Faculty who will be hooding a doctoral candidate will check in at the Speech and Hearing Sciences building by 9 am for the 10 a.m. ceremony and 1:30 for the 2:30 p.m. ceremony. More information will be sent from the Graduate School.   

Faculty Processional
After the students and the platform party have processed, all faculty will march from the Payne Center to the east tunnel. Comfortable shoes are encouraged since faculty will be walking the distance from the Payne Center and into Reed Green Coliseum. Gold chair-back seats will be provided for faculty seating behind the students. Faculty members who need special assistance should contact the Office of Disability Accommodations at 601.266.5024. 

Faculty Recessional
Faculty will recess to the east and west tunnels at the conclusion of the ceremony after the platform party has exited. Faculty members will lead the student recessional to the individual college banners in the Payne Center to meet with their candidates and their guests.
