Degree Requirements - Master's

 

Master of Art Degree

Coursework.  A minimum of thirty (30) semester hours must be completed, including thesis credit.  

Substantive Core (6 hours)
CMS 600, CMS 735

Research Methods (9 hours)
CMS 720
REF 602, REF 671, CMS 721, or CMS 722

CMS Electives (9 hours)

Thesis (6 hours)

Additional Requirements.  All candidates complete a thesis and take a comprehensive examination along with the oral defense of the thesis. A 3.0 GPA is required for graduation. Students must complete the degree within 6 years of initial enrollment and adhere to the University’s continuous enrollment requirement.  Details may be found in the current Graduate Bulletin.   In brief, students should be continuously enrolled after completing coursework until completing all requirements for the masters degree.  The Department of Speech Communication requires that students register for 3 hours of credit during any semester the student works with a professor on a thesis. Students using other university resources such as the library can register for 1 credit hour. 

 

Master of Science Degree

Curricular requirements.  A minimum of thirty (30) semester hours must be completed.

CMS Electives (15 hours)

Additional requirements.  All candidates complete a written comprehensive exam.  A 3.0 GPA is required for graduation. Students must complete the degree within 6 years of initial enrollment and adhere to the University’s continuous enrollment requirement.  Details may be found in the Graduate Bulletin.   In brief, students should be continuously enrolled after completing coursework until completing all requirements for the masters degree.  Students using university resources such as the library must register for at least 1 credit hour.
