What is PeopleSoft?

PeopleSoft provides an integrated software solution for Student Administration, Financials, and Human Resources/Payroll. Geared originally toward business, the company has a growing presence in higher education -- in fact, the California State University system, which serves more than 350,000 students, chose PeopleSoft.

Why does USM need a new system?

The Bull DPS 9092 Mainframe Computer was decommissioned in June 2002. Implemented in the late 1960’s, the old system has worked well for USM, but has become obsolete. In fact, the maintenance on the Bull DPS 9092 and the backup Bull DPS 8000 totaled $58,000 per month. If a major part broke, there were few new parts made and very few places where we could get used parts.

Additionally, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, like PeopleSoft, ensures that every aspect of The University of Southern Mississippi is focused on keeping university administrators and employees efficient and the students satisfied with the services they receive.

Why was PeopleSoft Selected?

USM began the search for a new HR/Payroll software system in December 1997. After evaluating three products--PeopleSoft, America, and SCT's Banner-- the USM selection team recommended PeopleSoft. The Institute for Higher Learning approved this recommendation in 1998. The evaluation and approval of the Student Administration and Financial system was completed later that year.

How many universities are using PeopleSoft?

The initial higher education product was developed in conjunction with seven colleges and universities. Student Administration has been licensed by over 300 higher education institutions with more being added all the time.
